StartupWeekend: 70 Founders Create Company In One Weekend

Written by on Saturday, July 7th, 2007 in Ajax News.

StartupWeekend is occurring right now in Colorado. The goal - create a startup in one weekend, which will be called vosnap. Everyone who attends is a founder, with equal equity. Ideas for what the company will be have been gathered since June. Last night the group decided which idea to pursue out of fifty submissions.

The winner: a product that facilitates quick decision making among a group. Choices will be sent out to the group via email and text messages, responses are gathered within a window of time.

The weekend will be spent building it, and launch it by midnight Sunday night.

The event is being run by some of the guys from TechStars (a Y Combinator-like incubator), as well as others, but it is not one of the TechStars startups.

We’ll be updating with more information as the project progresses. I’m fascinated to see what seventy people are able to put together over one long weekend of hacking

The live stream from the event is below.

Gizmoz To Get Mainstream Attention At MTV Music Awards

Written by on Saturday, July 7th, 2007 in Ajax News.

Gizmoz, an Israeli startup that allows people to create realistic 3D cartoon avatars of themselves and embed them on other websites, will be getting a little mainstream attention at the upcoming MTV Music Awards in September.

On Monday, MTV, Taco Bell and Gizmoz will jointly announce a new website and promotion: users will go to tacobell.gizmoz.com and create a fifteen second audition of themselves doing anything they like. Taco Bell will select three winners and create a new thirty second spot with Gizmoz technology that will be played at the MTV music awards in September. The site is live now, but all content will be cleared or the Monday announcement (so wait until then to create an audition).

All auditions will be publicly available and viewers can rate them. The three winners will be paid and given a years worth of Taco Bell food (hopefully not all at once).

Gizmoz is an impressive and fun widget platform - and it’s something MySpacers in particular are likely to crowd to over time. This kind of exposure is great for the company…and we hear that Taco Bell is actually paying them for this, not the other way around.

Steorn Now Being Openly Mocked

Written by on Saturday, July 7th, 2007 in Ajax News.

Irish startup Steorn blew the hugely hyped demo of their new perpetual energy machine when “excessive heat from the lighting in the main display area” led them to abort the affair. However, the guys at LouderVoice somehow got access to Steorn’s “CEO” and “Machine” for this exclusive demo.

Steorn is now at risk of becoming more ridiculous than Clown Co. Their own countrymen are openly mocking them.

Pownce Invites For Sale On eBay

Written by on Saturday, July 7th, 2007 in Ajax News.

pownce.jpgProving that everything has a market, invites to Kevin Rose’s P2P service Pownce are up for sale on eBay.

Bidding on Pownce invites start at 1c with buy it now prices at $5.

It wasn’t that long ago when Gmail invites were available for sale on eBay, although I’d suggest there is a world of difference between the wildly innovative email platform (at the time) and a P2P platform such as Pownce. The question then becomes, for those desperate for an invite: Yes or No, Thank You; the exact options on the error message Pownce Desktop Client users get to see at least a dozen times a day.

Dave Winer’s TwitterGram

Written by on Saturday, July 7th, 2007 in Ajax News.

Dave Winer likes to throw web services and his own software in a blender and see what comes out, and his new TwitterGram project is a perfect example. In this case, he’s married the Twitter API to his own service that allows people to upload short audio messages to their Twitter accounts. He’s then taken the next step of allowing people to phone in their messages via BlogTalkRadio. The result is a super easy way to post audio messages to your Twitter account via a phone.

Like most of Dave’s projects, there’s no obviou business purpose to the service, and he seems to be creating something new and useful for the sole purpose of keeping his mind busy. Not all of his projects take off, but they are always interesting and fun to explore.

And don’t mis-underestimate him, either. He’s made plenty of money along the way while helping the Internet ecosystem. I wonder what he’ll blend up next.
