Big Media And User Comments: The Onion Nails It

Written by on Saturday, October 6th, 2007 in Ajax News.

User feedback on blogs (or any Internet forum/community) is always fascinating to watch. Things start of great, but as the community gets larger basic human rules for interaction break down and, basically, everything goes to hell. The Onion, as usual, has a very funny look at how big media might interact with user feedback in the video above. The uselessness of trying to respond intelligently to the most outrageous comments is dead on and extremely funny.

Also check out the College Humor video that shows what a comment stream might look like in the form of an office meeting. Anyone who runs a blog will appreciate both of these.

Feedburner Bug, Or We More Than Doubled Our RSS Subscribers

Written by on Saturday, October 6th, 2007 in Ajax News.

feedburnerbug.jpg1,511,000: the number of subscribed RSS readers of TechCrunch, according to the Feedburner Widget as I type this post. Given the number is up significantly from the 600,000 odd subscribers we had yesterday, I’m calling it a Feedburner bug.

Feedburner has had a long history of doing strange things with the subscriber counter, and TechCrunch’s readership (if the counter is to be believed) can fluctuate by over 50,000 readers from day to day, but I’ve never seen a 900,000 jump. Of course if it’s accurate congratulations to us are probably in order. -)

If you’ve just gained (or even lost) an extra hundred thousand readers, or perhaps even a million, let us know in the comments.

Loic Lemeur Building Video Twitter

Written by on Saturday, October 6th, 2007 in Ajax News.

Former Six Apart Europe head and well known French Web 2.0 entrepreneur Loic Lemeur relocated to San Francisco recently to build a new startup, and thanks to Robert Scoble we now know what it is: “video Twitter.”

Lemeur himself is documenting his startup every day on YouTube here. It’s not riveting content but listening to a non-American view on building a startup is refreshing at times.

Scoble also notes in the same post that Podtech has some big news coming up; one rumor doing the rounds is that Podtech video’s will be syndicated on some form of television station, presumably a cable one. Podtech competitor Podshow recently started distributing shows via TiVo.

Is Philip DeFranco The Heir To The ZeFrank Crown?

Written by on Saturday, October 6th, 2007 in Ajax News.

Ever since the arguably very popular ZeFrank finished his daily “The Show” earlier this year, I’ve been trying to find a decent Ze Frank alternative, a video blog that is short, sharp and hoepfully funny as well.

I’ve had a couple of tips recently that Philip DeFranco might fit the bill, and NewTeeVee included DeFranco on their list of ZeFrank successors yesterday.

Perhaps being a Saturday, and desperately trying find something more to write about than Facebook’s plans for world domination something to do with music (that know one really knows for sure what it is but it still hit the top of Techmeme anyway), I spent some time watching The Philip DeFranco Show.

He’s actually pretty good.

DeFranco has the whole ZeFrank quick delivery down-pat, and the content is fairly good. It’s a little more raw in terms of language than ZeFrank was so it will offend some people, but that aside the kid has talent.

A full backlog on DeFranco’s videos can be found here. I’ve subscribed; let’s hope he keeps up the good work and it might end up becoming this years “The Show with ZeFrank.”
